SLADE GARDENS

The park was regenerated under the guidance of The Friends of Slade Gardens, which was set up in 2006.   This was achieved using Section 106 funds (defined by the Town and Country Planning Act) from the Stockwell Estate, to create and implement plans for the multi-use area that serves local residents.  More recently, the park now relies on local donations and grants to improve the space, in consultation with residents and volunteers.

Slade Gardens works closely with the Adventure Playground to maximise the benefits of both spaces.  Sharing volunteers, equipment and information enables each to operate more efficiently and to provide vital resources for the local community.

Improvement work is ongoing, with more plants, hedges and trees introduced in recent years to further improve the park.  Volunteers help maintain the gardens in collaboration with Lambeth Parks’ maintenance team.  The volunteers meet several Saturdays a year: the dates are advertised on the park notice board, a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/FriendsSladeGardens and in an email newsletter.

Please do visit the Facebook group to see more information and history of the park, and to get involved, or email us at sladegardens@gmail.com.  We are always looking for additional volunteers and advice.

The responsibility for the adventure playground and One O clock club (OOCC) was first taken on by a few local residents in 1999, under the charity known as Slade Gardens Community Play association.

Our main purpose is to provide facilities for the recreation and other leisure time activities for the children of Lambeth and in particular those living in the Stockwell and Vassall wards. The OOCC is for the under 5s to “Stay and Play, rain or shine”.

The facilities we provide we believe local children need by reason of their youth, social and economic circumstances. We hope this treasured local resource, which is secure, staffed and free at the point of entry, will help improve their lives by promoting their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

In the past Lambeth council have helped fund this organisation but this has stopped and we are actively seeking other forms of income eg by incorporating use of the existing site more into the community.  The meeting hall is also available for hire eg the SPRA usually holds its AGM here.

We have an active partnership with a number of local groups, including the Friends of Slade Gardens and the SPRA. We hope to further improve the facilities in the near future eg to include a café to better serve users of the park.

The OOCC is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am to 3.0 pm.

The adventure playground is open Thursdays and Fridays 3 to 6 pm and on Saturday 11 am to 4 pm in term time.  During holidays the playground is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Many residents already support us through volunteering and we are always in need of more help.  Please either see our website for more details at www.sladeadventure.co.uk or email us at: sladeadventure@btinternet.com.

The venue cannot be hired without the playworker - they act as caretaker for the building as well setting up play structures, etc.

The playworker's fee must be paid in cash to the playworker on the day.
The playworker is not responsible for the children’s welfare; this responsibility must fall to the parents or carers on hand.
