I am delighted to be the Vicar of Stockwell Parish and a resident of Stockwell Park Road.  I am proud that we are such a warm, generous and fun-loving community.

I have been a parish priest now for 15 years, serving in two other parishes in South London before arriving here in Stockwell in November 2016. Prior to ordination, I was a British diplomat, serving in China and Eastern Europe.

I passionately believe that the local church and its parish priest are called to serve the whole community, not just those who are regular worshippers at Church of England services.  This community service starts with you, our neighbours, of all faiths and none.  As well as loving Jesus, Christians are called to build up the common good together with all their neighbours; and to be drawn into active partnerships with a wide range of groups in society, seeking justice, peace and reconciliation. These are my priorities, along with joyful participation in local community events, and proud judge of the Stockwell Park Summer Festival pet show.

I very much hope that you will continue to see St Michael’s church as your church.  Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.  I would love to hear from you.

St. Michael's Pre-School

We are a voluntary pre-school in St Michael’s church hall, catering for the care and educational development of local children, aged 2 to 5 year olds, since 1960. We are open five days a week, term time, from 8.30-3pm. We offer full day places as well as a morning session (9-12pm) and an afternoon session (12-3pm).  Free places are available to children who are entitled to government funding.

We provide a wide range of excellent activities both inside and outside to guarantee that all the seven areas of learning and development are met, and for children to learn through play. Parents are encouraged to participate in topics and activities as we pride ourselves on making the setting feel welcoming to everyone. We have an open door policy and parents are free to come in any morning and have a chat with staff and see how the group works.

Why not come and find out more and see if we would suit your child? For more information please check our website at www.preschoolstmichaels.com or contact us at stmichaelschurchhall@hotmail.com or by phone to Julie Warner (term time only) 020 7274 0783.

Consultation on Possible Community Uses

St Michael’s is a Grade II listed CoE church consecrated in 1841 in the heart of the Stockwell Park Conservation area. It is going great guns and used intensively on Sundays, but rarely used during the week. This needs to change and a core part of the Stockwell Parish Mission Action Plan (MAP) is Community Partnership, a key element of which is opening up the Church building to wider use by and for the local community for non-spiritual use. The Parish wants to see St Michael’s as a key hub of the Community that lives around it. A copy of the MAP can be found on the Parish website here. Fundraising and plans for repair and redecoration of the Church are underway and it is hoped that main body of the Church might be done by the end of the year.

The Parish and the Friends of St Michael’s (the charity raising money to repair and refurbish the Church) now wish to consult on how the Community (congregations and neighbours) would like to use St Michael’s in the future. This will inform thinking about what the options might be and how the interior could be arranged to provide flexibility of use, without compromising its core purpose or listed status. It is expected that this will also generate income that to help maintain and support the running costs of the building.

Please give us your views

We would like to know what you think. Please fill in our survey. It lists some ideas that are popular in other churches and asks you for your views. The survey should take you about 8 minutes to complete.

St Michael’s Restoration.

We are working hard to restore St Michael’s church and hall and ensure it meets 21st Century community requirements.  We have recently repaired the roof, replaced the lighting, inside and out, which has transformed the building and enhanced its beauty afresh.  Now we need to repair and restore the interior, and repair our beautiful organ. As you know, historic buildings like St Michael’s need constant up-keep, and we are now working hard to raise the money to ensure this process continues in a way that enhances both the church building and its place in the community.

Please consider helping us by making a donation towards the repair and restoration of our historic jewel, by contacting the vicar, the Revd Erica Wooff, through the details below.

About St Michael’s Church:

St Michael’s stands proudly as a jewel of our community, and is one of the two parish churches of Stockwell. It is Grade 2 listed, and has been a place of worship for over 150 years. We are part of the Church of England in the Diocese of Southwark. We offer a warm welcome to all who come for worship. Our congregations reflect the diversity of our local community.

For service times, please see the church website.

We are currently developing a new suite of services which will reflect the needs and preferences of local people, including informal services and evening worship. Please come along and try us, and let us know what you think!

We particularly welcome children and young people. The 2nd Sunday each month has a more informal structure where children may take an active part in worship. Other Sundays we offer separate children's activities during the 9.45am service. We work with our local schools, and are developing our children and young people’s activities in creative and resourceful ways, to include:

  • "Messy" church

  • St Michael’s 8th Lambeth Scouts and Guides

  • Stockwell churches’ youth club

  • Children’s choir

  • Drama and art workshops

  • Donkey rides on Palm Sunday.
