Stockwell Park Festival, 2002

Our local festival in June got off to a resounding start with Friday?s concert, which included works sung by Patricia Ninian and Jennifer McGregor, also the Stockwell Choir, and a Beethoven violin and piano sonata.

On Saturday the Golden Jubilee Street Party, the largest community event ever organised here, took place in good weather after months of preparation including dutiful conforming to local regulations. About six hundred people partook of a gourmet barbecue and salads and enjoyed the bouncy castle, sumo-style fat-suit wrestling, a stilt-walking Pied Piper, face painting, street stalls and a chance to be photographed as Ruritanian royalty, while being serenaded by professional musicians.

The weather on Sunday was equally kind, ensuring a good turn-out for the Gardens Open Day, when five normally private retreats could be visited, with a superb tea and children?s entertainment at the last port of call.

Thanks to all your contributions of time, gifts in kind and money, the Association?s costs were easily covered, leaving a healthy surplus. Even more so than in past years, we have been able to return funds to the immediate community in the following ways:

? ?300 to the Home in Stockwell Park Crescent

? ?250 towards the restoration of St Michael?s Church

? ?250 towards the refurbishment of the Church Hall

? ?200 for St Michael?s Playgroup?s new climbing frame

? ?200 to Stockwell Park Estate Youth Club

? ?200 to Slade Gardens Community Play Association

? ?300 to the Type Museum

? A further donation earmarked for the former Somerville Hastings redevelopment fighting fund
