TRANSPORT FOR LONDON URGES RESIDENTS TO GIVE THEIR OPINIONS
Public exhibition for Stockwell Square/ Binfield Road
As part of our work to improve conditions on London's roads, Transport for London Street Management (TfLSM) is urging local residents to give their views on proposals to pedestrianise Binfield Road in support of the Stockwell Masterplan, which sets out the community's aims of managing traffic away from residential streets, promoting walking and cycling, and improving the local environment.
TfLSM has worked with Lambeth Council and the Stockwell Partnership to improve safety and the environment for all who live and work in Stockwell. We therefore want local residents to let us know what they think of these proposals so that the improvements meet residents and road users needs.
Residents are invited to attend a public exhibition held in the foyer of the Stockwell Community Resource Centre, Studley Road (behind Stockwell Station) from January 23 - 25, 10am until 8pm, to view detailed plans of the proposals. TfLSM staff will be available to answer questions from 10am - 12noon and 5pm - 7pm on 23 and 24 January and from 2pm - 4pm on Saturday 25 January.
The road closure will improve safety and the efficiency of the traffic signals
at Stockwell Cross by reducing delays for vehicles - particularly buses. This
scheme will also make the area more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists and
will assist pedestrians interchanging between buses and the Tube.
Proposal:
The closure of Binfield Road to traffic will create a focal point at the heart of Stockwell - a brand new public space that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors. The new square will include:
The closure of Binfield Road (except for access and servicing) complements the local 'red route' works, which include the closure of Lansdowne Way to traffic from Clapham Road and the opening of the Stockwell Cross Memorial Gardens to pedestrians.
