STOCKWELL PARTNERSHIP
In May, 2003, Lucy Annan wrote:
Stockwell Partnership is a partnership of local people, community groups, businesses and public organisations, working together to initiate improvements in and around Stockwell.
Last year the Partnership secured temporary funding from the connecting Stockwell SRB (Single Regeneration Budget) to employ a director. Since then he has been involved in securing the future for the Partnership working on a bid to Urban II. Urban II is European funding aimed at the most socially disadvantaged wards in Britain, and throughout Europe. Stockwell and Larkhall wards are the only London boroughs to have been selected for this round of funding.
If the Stockwell Partnership is successful it will enable them to employ specialist staff, an advice worker to deal with day to day problems faced by many Stockwell residents, and a small grants advisor who would help community groups apply for funds to enable them to become self-sufficient.
Reaching Your Destination
The Partnership has secured small quantities of different types of funding for a study into crime and pedestrian movement in central Stockwell. Called 'Reaching Your Destination' it plans to identify crime hotspots but also those where there is fear of crime, possible because of threatening surroundings. The aim of the project is to build up a list of physical and managerial solutions to the areas that have been identified. It might be a scheme for better lighting or a proposal for a warden scheme.
There is much better co-ordination between all the agencies which tackle crime throughout the Borough. We are grateful for the fantastic support of Charlotte Evans, the Clapham and Stockwell town centre manager.
Children's projects
As a result of providing funding advice to the Good Shepherd Charity for Children, which works with asylum seekers in the Eurotower, near Larkhall Park, the group has now been awarded £150,000 funding from the Home Office to expand services and employ support staff.
The Stockwell Partnership has contracted with the government initiative Sure Start to co-ordinate a consultation with young parents and carers. Our role is to identify people's needs and link up with existing community and voluntary groups and identify groups who want to assist in the consultation, provide training and offer support.
Annie McCall
The Partnership have been included in a team of members of the Council and the Stockwell Artists who currently occupy the Stockwell Studios in the Annie McCall Maternity Hospital on the corner of Jeffrys Road and McCall Close. The building has been benevolently squatted by the Stockwell Artists, but the time has come when the site has to be developed. The hospital is earmarked for community use so it cannot be sold purely for housing and the artists disbanded. Two bidders have been shortlisted to develop the site and we await the Council's decision but, whatever the outcome, the development will include space and facilities for the residents of Stockwell.
Wandsworth Road improvements
The Partnership's Environmental Masterplan, commissioned in 2000, has identified various environmental projects. It helped to attract over £1 million of funding for improving the Wandsworth Road which has since found more than £2 million additional match funds. Work has already begun there and is almost completed.
