Summer Festival Review
Although attendance down because of World Cup, Festival events voted a success. Profit likely to be in the region of £500 (£643 in 2005). Final expenses not yet submitted. Festival date for 2007. Would a Festival date, say, a fortnight earlier fit in better with end-of-term school events? *Amanda to look into school dates. When date decided, invite Peter Manning to play again.
Teas
Jane Turcan reported on teas and kindly agreed to run them again next year. Many thanks.
Decisions
Raise tea price to £2.50 adults and £2 children. Help needed to ferry tables/chairs at beginning and end.
Children’s party
Kass reported about 47 children attended and entertainer good. Cost £190 this year /£150 last year. Committee thought price reasonable. Age range catered for 3 – 8 yrs. Kass agreed to be in charge again next year. Many thanks.
Decisions
Change time of party to 4 – 6 p.m. Book same entertainer. Party to remain free of charge.
Concert
Attendance up. Ticket sales £508; Piano hire £399; Bar £175 (only seem to be getting 5 glasses out of a bottle of wine). Programme printing expenses not in yet. Roberta’s payment in advance system for wine voted a triumph: avoided queues.
Decisions
Charge £2 at concert bar for (generous) glass of wine. Simon suggested increasing concert ticket price to £10. Concessions to remain for families/children but over 60s to pay full price.
Gardens
Success. £300 profit.
Decisions
Put price up to £5? Include Almshouses? If so, better map. Consider lengthening gardens opening time by half an hour.
Barbecue
Decisions
Charge £2 per burger with high-quality sausages, burgers and buns. Choc bars for children discussed but who would refrigerate them?
Donations (once final figures in): to be kept to our very local charities. *Amanda and Simon to make some initial enquiries and inform next meeting.
Planning and the environment
Traffic Calming
Installation of agreed measures underway. Liz had spoken to Abu Barkatoolah at Lambeth Traffic & Highways who had expressed surprise that, in some instances, the new asphalt tops are red and not black as had been expected. This is a mistake on the contactor’s part and will be rectified.
Implementation of 20 mph zone
Liz had also expressed the concerns of many St Martin’s and Burnley Roads residents that these roads will not be included in the 20 mph zone when introduced. Martin Sachs, Head of Traffic and Highways, and Abu Barkatoolah had agreed that, if the SPRA will draft a paragraph for inclusion in a consultation letter, explaining the Association’s support for extension of the zone, and will also distribute an Association document to the residents of these streets, they will extend the zone. Liz and Simon will agree a draft.
Street signs
Following the Association’s criticism of the street signs which had been installed in 2005, Martin Sachs had invited Liz to meet him and the Council’s consultant on the subject, Mike Tobin. Evidently the signs installed last year had been under a special London Opportunities Fund, now exhausted, and no further installations are planned, pending a new policy currently being drafted. It was agreed that the SPRA should support the continued use throughout the borough of the simple Type Museum design which had been co-ordinated by George Wright of the Stockwell Partnership, together with new bye-laws to allow the Council to place signs on walls. Liz to write to Traffic and Highways and to the consultant.
Type Museum
Susan Shaw has encouraging plans for the Museum and will write a piece for next SPRA Newsletter.
Lorn Road Garage
A planning application has been made to demolish the garage at the Brixton end of Lorn Road, replacing it with a larger garage with flats above. Simon Henley has submitted objections on behalf of the Association in support of those made by a number of residents.
14-24 Stockwell Park Crescent
Council has approved application for security gates at the entrance to Sommerville Mews.
Stockwell Park Estate
The meeting originally planned by Angus Stewart had been postponed following arrangement by George Clarke (56 Stockwell Park Road) of a public meeting on 28 June to discuss regeneration plans for the Stockwell Park Estate. Following this, a note from Richard Bankart appeared on the Stockwell Park website summarising what appears to be a very complicated situation. Simon Henley has written to George Clarke citing a number of objections to current proposals.
Crime and security
Garages in St Michael’s Road: It was noted that there had been an attempted mugging next to the garages which are set back from the pavement at the Crescent end of St Michael’s Road. Liz to contact Viv Cook at 34a Stockwell Park Crescent to ascertain the position with the planning application by the residents of nos. 32/34 to erect security gates across the entrance to the garages.
Next meeting: 7.30 p.m. Tuesday 22nd August 2006 at Anthony and Janine’s house, 29 Stockwell Park Crescent To discuss arrangements for AGM on Thursday 28th September 2006. * Anthony to ask Ian Sweeney to put date on website by 16/17th September. Liz to discuss printed notice for distribution previous week with Darius Poli.
(Kass asked Minutes to record that he would like to host committee meeting following the August fixture.)
