STOCKWELL PARK RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION
Minutes of meeting held on Tuesday, 20th September at 7.30 pm at 28 Stockwell Park Road.
Present:
- Anthony Gladstone-Thompson
- Amanda Cornish
- Simon Doff
- Kass Kassim
- Caroline Hirst
Apologies:
- Liz Aves
- Martin Kenyon
Minutes of last meeting: Kass reported on the children’s summer party by informing us that there 42 people attended and it went well with good entertainment. Kass asked about the cost to which Simon responded that the total cost was approximately £200.00. After some discussion about how we could lower the cost so as to leave more SPRA money to donate to local causes Kass said that he would think about money raising activities.
Treasury funds and donations: Simon reported that £1,598.00 had been raised at the festival. However the costs for the whole festival came to £1,157.
At present funds stand at £660.00 including £40.00 from families who have contributed membership donations.
A discussion followed about whether or not we should aim to cover only our expenses and leave donating money to local causes to the Revolving Dinner Party. Simon confirmed that a “special” newsletter for encouraging voluntary subscriptions is happening.
2005 – 2006 dates: Christmas party - it was decided that we should follow last year’s successful format whereby the party followed on from the Carol Concert.
Summer festival 2006 - there was a discussion about the format of the festival in view of the attendance figures for 2005. The result was that the 2006 will be:
Saturday, 24.06.06 Children’s party and the concert
Sunday, 25.06.06 Gardens open.
However there is a proposal for the 2007 concert to be on the Thursday evening prior to the festival week-end to give a chance for people who go away for the week-end to attend.
AGM 2006: date to be decided at October meeting.
Environment and planning: Lighting - Phil Thompson has e-mailed to say that the council are improving street lighting across the borough. The SPRA area will get lights like the ones in Lorn Road which are now being used elsewhere in the borough!
14 – 24 SPC: there have been problems with the neighbours to the site because of the depth of the excavation near the party wall. David Tomlinson has set up meetings between the parties concerned but at present the outcome in unknown.
11 – 15 SPC: The ambulance lines outside this property were repainted and enlarged. After neighbours pointed out that they are no longer relevant the council apologized and will replace them with residents’ bays in the next few weeks.
32 -34 SPC: Following rejection of an initial planning application to install iron gates at the entrance to the flats and the garages in St Michael’s Road, Liz Aves put the residents in touch with the crime prevention and community safety officers. The CPO has written recommending installation of gates and put the residents in touch with Kate Hoye.
Traffic calming: in mid- September there was to be formal consultation on these. The proposals are tables at the following places: St. Michael’s/ St. Martin’s Roads junction, in the Crescent approximately opposite No. 42 and 14 – 24 and in SPR opposite the entrance to the 1 O’Clock Club. SPC residents are requesting additional calming measures at the Lorn Road and Groveway junctions.
Church Hall noise: Anthony brought up the question of the noise coming from the Church Hall on Sunday afternoons because some people find it rather intrusive.
Neighbourhood Watch: many thanks to David Tomlinson for such a thorough report about the areas surrounding SPRA. The committee noted that crime rates went up immediately after 7/7 but since policing has returned to normal crime rates have gone down again. We also noted that thanks to improved managements and communities on the Stockwell Park and Cowley estates things are quiet and under control.
The Section 30 Order in the Brixton Road/Lorn Road area is not to be renewed. There has been a major improvement in the prostitution problem in this area.
Stockwell Ward has a new Sergeant in charge, Samantha Dyson and there is a full complement of Police Officers and PCSOs in this ward.
A.O.B.: Amanda reported that Stockwell Park School laid on an excellent evening to celebrate the school’s success. Ms. Tapper, the H.T. outlined the school’s ideas for encouraging talented pupils through their new “Academies for excellence” initiative. E.g. a specifically targeted talented writer might benefit from a laptop or a child talented at sport could benefit from being provided with the relevant equipment. Amanda, therefore, suggested that some SPRA funds might help and she will find out more from the school.
Thank you Amanda for your hospitality. Next meeting on 17th October at 7.30 pm at Kaz’s house, 37 St. Martin’s Road.
