Lighting Meeting
14th July. Congratulations to Simon for having organised this with
such success. Important people present: Kate Hoey M.P., Councillors
Daniel Sabbagh,
Anthony Bottrall and
Marcus Mayers; Council officials: Frances Forrest
and Paul McCann. All visitors who attended the meeting have been thanked by email.
As a result of the meeting, written bids for funding were made to the Clapham and Stockwell Area Committee (CSAC) and the North Lambeth Area Committee (NLAC).
At the July 23rd meeting of the CSAC, the SPRA was awarded ?5,000 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and ?5,000 from the Building Safer Communities Fund for road lighting improvements. The money must be used in Stockwell Ward by 31/3/04 and is subject to agreeing best value with council officials responsible for street lighting. This will take place at a meeting being arranged by Councillor Daniel Sabbagh.
A briefing note to Councillor Anthony Bottrall from Robin Aitken, Principal Highways Engineer, suggests that all standard lanterns can be upgraded by installing stronger lamps. However, it is not clear if the same upgrade can be made to conservation lanterns. The above meeting will clarify this matter.
The NLAC is meeting on September 4th and it may be making decisions on which bids to support.
Kate Hoey has asked to be kept informed of progress on street lighting and expects to attend a SPRA meeting in the autumn convened to discuss all aspects of crime.
Simon suggested residents be circulated along these lines: it IS worth coming to community meetings such as the lighting meeting. Look what was achieved in one such meeting! Local democracy can make a difference! Anthony Bottrall should be given special recognition for all his support, which culminated in the grant award. Liz Aves suggested an A4 sheet be produced with this news along with a resume of the festival. Simon and Liz will discuss this further.
Crucial Networking: Important decisions including the allocation of money are taking place at Ward, Area Committee and Borough levels. Senior council officials such as the Director of Social Services, the Principal Community Safety Officer and the Borough Commander make presentations to and take questions from residents at these meetings. A major effort must be made for SPRA to be represented and for this duty to be shared. These groups are:
