In reference to the mysterious rumblings experienced by David Savage, the vibrations most definitely are the Underground, as anyone who lives at the Clapham Road end of Stockwell Park Road (or indeed Clapham Road itself) will testify. The Northern line is the one responsible, which helpfully runs right under Clapham Road (ie. 50m from our house!).
The vibrations are ever-present here, but noticeable more at night when there are fewer distractions. One gets used to them, and I find them strangely comforting (much like living close to the sea). Christmas Day is of course the only rumble-free day in the year.
We used to hear them at night, pianissimo, when we lived in Cranworth Gardens, which is a good 200 metres from the tube, so it doesn't surprise me that Lorn Road is within ear shot.
