Stockwell Park Neighbourhood Watch falls into 2 wards: Vassall Ward and Stockwell Ward
Crime statistics: these are difficult to compile as our Neighbourhood Watch area is divided, the police beats cover an area that is not contiguous with the SPRA and the two Home beat Officers are based in different stations. And such figures only relate to reported incidents.
Major concerns of residents: (Nb. overall there has been much less reported crime)
? Motor vehicle crime: breaking into of cars has been frequent, though not always reported
? Drug-related (dealing & using) crime: regular police operations have had significant success
? Street Robbery, i.e. mugging ? personal safety on the streets (including ?snatches?): though there have been several incidents, much less has been reported than a year ago
? Burglary of premises, including gardens and theft of plants: very little reported
? Police presence on the beat(s): the Brixton Road part of Vassall Ward is heavily policed but the number of officers available for Stockwell has dropped sharply. There have been several operations centred on the Tube station and surrounding area
? Street lighting: better lighting is essential to help cut crime. Neighbourhood Watch is working with Simon Doff & the SPRA to help effect an improvement in street lighting.
? CCTV cameras: the feasibility of placing these in crime hotspots is being studied but both capital and maintenance costs would be considerable. The ?microwave? camera in St.Michael?s Road is no longer there; the second one promised did not materialise. There is now an extensive and effective system in place on the Stockwell Park and Robsart Estates.
? Reporting of crime: this can be very slow and tedious.
For residents to note:
? Neighbourhood Watch meetings are held several times a year with the Home Beat Officers for Stockwell and Vassall Wards. Our Councillors are always asked and sometimes attend. We also hope to invite Charlotte Evans, the Town Manager for Lambeth, and Kate Hoey MP.
? If you wish, please let the Neighbourhood Watch know (preferably by e-mail or note) of any incident. This is NOT a substitute for reporting directly to the police, but simply a way for us to keep track of what is happening in the area and to pass on any relevant information to the Home Beat Officers. This has resulted in effective action in several cases.
If you are interested in being notified about Neighbourhood Watch meetings, please contact your
Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators: William & Gill Wayne (020) 7274 5775 or wswayne@bun.com
If anyone would like to take over as Co-ordinators or to assist in any way, please step forward! We need street representatives for Lorn Road, St Martin?s Road and part of Brixton Road.
