Parking on Stockwell Park Road

Anthony Bottrall reports:

Extra residents' parking bays should have been created when road markings were recently put down on Stockwell Park Road. However, due to a communication failure, when a key member of staff moved on to another position, the changes were not made. It is possible that they may be implemented before the end of April.

Poacher Becomes Gamekeeper

Changes to 189 Clapham Road

Lidl have negotiated a deal with the current occupants of 189 Clapham Road which should ensure no more loud parties. To back this up concrete bollards have been installed within the site which should hopefully prevent any electrical generators being taken onto the premises.

Friendly Almshouses

The Friendly Almshouses which are located in the middle of the Stockwell Park estate - 167 Stockwell Park Road to be precise - are always looking for people to be involved. Four local residents are Committee Members at present. They are actively looking for a volunteer Treasurer. Anyone who would like more information should contact .

Traffic Calming

There has been considerable concern about the speed of through traffic on some of our roads, resulting in a number of accidents, including in one case the write-off of a properly parked resident's car.

Following approaches to Lambeth by residents in the Crescent, Lambeth commissioned consultants to carry out a traffic speed census in St Michael's Road, the north section of Stockwell Park Crescent, and Stockwell Park Road (south of the Groveway junction) in late 2004. The results confirmed that the average speed of traffic in the north end of the Crescent (particularly southbound) and in the 'unhumped' section of Stockwell Park Road called for traffic calming measures.

The consultants have therefore proposed physical speed restrictions in some places, as shown on the map at www.stockwellpark.com/images/traffic-calming.pdf. They consist primarily of wide raised 'plateaux' at kerb height, as humps and pillows are no longer acceptable to the emergency services.

These proposals have to be considered by the emergency services and will be open to a full public consultation procedure, probably from the end of June. Subject to the outcome of consultation and to Council Committee approval, construction of the final design would be completed by March 2006. Our representatives have been assured by Lambeth Highways Department that in principle the proposal for some form of traffic calming is acceptable to the Council and that funds are available for this work in the 2005/2006 financial year.

Although there will be a formal consultation period later, through having worked with the Council and the consultants from the outset, we are in the fortunate position of being able to comment on the initial proposal (and maybe have it modified if we wish) before it goes out officially.

David Tomlinson is acting as intermediary with both Lambeth Highways and the consultants, and if you have any comments or queries he is happy to field them, and pass on a co-ordinated response. You can contact him at david.s.tomlinson@tomlinsons.uk.com

David has the detailed data of the traffic census on a (large) number of Excel spreadsheets which he is happy to forward to anybody interested in them.

Wire across street between 32 and 17 Stockwell Park Crescent

The highways department has confirmed that electrical contractor EDF will install an underground connection to replace the wire, which feeds the CCTV camera, though this will take 2-3 months because of a work backlog.
