"I hope you and other concerned residents have heard that this item is coming back to Committee tonight for what is largely a technicality and that the decisions taken on Freeman's last time round will still remain unchanged."

"Lambeth Council has, in my view, unnecessarily alarmed a great many people with the notification it sent out last week regarding Freemans. As you may be aware, the permission was unanimously refused by the Planning Committee in January with myself and Cllr Sabbagh from Vassall, in particular, speaking against it.

To clarify the position, the Commitee directed at the meeting in January that the application be brought back to their next meeting so that the reasons for refusal could be clarified. This is what is being discussed at Committee tomorrow, but it should have been worded more clearly in the notification that was circulated. Cllr Sabbagh is investigating further."

"I have now spoken to Sherry Bennet, the planning officer.
The meeting on the 8th of March is to ratify the Planning Committee's decision of the 18th of January. It states quite clearly in the minutes of that meeting that the planning permission was refused at Councillor Palmer's recommendation; this was seconded.
The reasons stated
Over-development,bulk,height
Loss of employment
Affordable Housing
Privacy loss for residents of Durand Gardens
Setting of the listed building on site

They are minded to grant listed building consent, in otherwords permission to knock down 1940's rear extension. This does not effect the original print works on Clapham Road.

I hope this information helps the members of the Stockwell Park Conservation Area."

"Freeman/Ridale developments plans to redevelop this site have been rejected. Even though the planning department was ‘minded to grant permission’ the strong opposition caused the present proposals to be denied.

Although this was Freemans fourth revision of their original plans it was still rejected for the same reasons: Bulk, Mass, only 40% social housing, right of light, loss of employment, Highways department, and Freemans inability to convince that they are remaining on the site. It looks like that there is going to be another building sitting empty on the Clapham Road for some time to come."

"Only one comment springs out, regarding car parking. The architect's PC assertion to encourage other means of future residents' transport on the site to cycling, walking, etc. sounds only like an excuse not to provide proper car parking within the scheme itself, in favour of saleable living space. Parking as I have to do in Durand Gardens (I'm at 244 Clapham Road - Red Route !), paying as a Resident, I have been aware of the greater freedom of space since daily commuters were discouraged but this scheme will greatly add to street parking if not organised within the new building itself."

"Can you please pass the word round that I have just heard from Lambeth's planning department that there will be a SITE VISIT on Saturday 15th of January at 10.00 am. Those who are still opposed to the revised plans can draw to the planning committee's attention aspects of the site or its surroundings that they think important."

"The residents may be interested to know that a new planning application, for the Freeman's site, is to be put before the planning committee at 7 p.m, on the 18th of January.,Room 8, Lambeth Town Hall. This I understand is the fourth revision. They have reduced the height of the new building, to the rear West end of the site. This appears to make the building, no more visible, from Stockwell Park Road than the existing building. There are, of course plans available at the planning office. Lambeth planning department is 'minded to grant permission'."

"Freeman PLC/Ridale Developments Ltd have reapplied to redevelop the old printworks building etc. The difference from last time is that they have reduced the density of the new building from 7 floors to 6. This should reduce the building's exposure to Stockwell Park Road, but I await confirmation from Alan Hesketh. They have reduced the number of residential units from 315 to 243, increased the B1 to 8181 m2, increased the affordable housing to 37%, improved the facade of the new office block. It also appears that the building does not look as fortress like as before. In other words this application must appeal more to Lambeth planning department than before. If this concerns any of you please get on to the council's website www.lambeth.gov.uk or contact Alan Hesketh at Acre House, 10 Acre Lane, London, , where you will be able to study the plans in detail."

"There will be a meeting, 2003-12-17 19:00, to consider the revised plans. The meeting will take place in room 8, Ground Floor, Lambeth Town Hall. Very short notice at a time of year when everyone is busy. This is not a new scheme, but the developers might use this opportunity to push a fresh scheme, which has just been presented to Lambeth planning office. There will also be a site meeting, 2003-12-13 10:00, which you are entitled to attend."

"Lambeth Planning Department have very kindly replied to my objections to the proposed development of Freemans. They will be holding a meeting, 2003-10-28 19:00, in room 8 at the Town Hall to discuss Freemans latest planning application. Although the planning department is recommending that the permission be REFUSED, I do suggest that everyone who is interested, keeps an eye on this. The planning department can be taken to court, even circumvented. Unfortunately I am away on that day, but anyone wishing to register their point of view should contact the marvellously named Democratic Services Division on (020) 7926 2170."

Freemans site (131-143 Clapham Road): Proposed redevelopment includes office use for Freemans, small office units, health and fitness centre, restaurant/cafe, convenience shop, 298 residential units (including 83 affordable homes) and amenity space. Proposed to:

Proposed to discourage the private car and encourage use of alternative means (walking, cycling, public transport).
