The Slade Gardens Adventure Playground won the `Best Adventure Playground in London, 2003'. The panel of judges included five children from the previous year's winning adventure playground, Charlie Chaplin, which caters mainly for disabled children. The playground received £3,000 worth of play equipment from the sponsors, eibe play and Burdens.
The Adventure Playground is an open access facility which means the children are free to come and go as they please. They are supervised by trained staff at all times while they are on the playground.
The playground is open all year round for children and young people aged 5-16 years. The playground has four permanent workers: Andy, Ann, Kathy (under 8`s development worker), and Rita (Senior Worker). At the moment the playground is having some really exciting new swings built outside. The playground is open, while this work is in progress, offering a wide range of activities: arts/crafts, painting, batik, sewing, cooking, model-making, football, pool, table-tennis, gardening and lots more!
Term-time opening hours are:
3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Tuesday - Friday.
11:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Saturday
Holiday opening hours are 10:00am - 6:00pm Monday.-Friday.
People can call in and pick up a programme of activities or can contact the playground on (020) 7737 3829 (phone/fax). They are always looking for volunteers and would be very grateful to anyone who can help with painting, building, gardening, grass cutting etc. or any other skills they can offer.
Ideas for the committee of the Adventure Playground should be sent to Robin Langton.
